This blender is good, very good, at what it does, but I only gave it 4 stars because I can’t use it to make a breakfast shake, it’s just too loud.
You really should not turn this on if you think someone may be sleeping anywhere nearby— this definitely is not for an apartment dweller. It is like a buzz saw. Even during the evening I wonder about a neighbor who might be calmly reading, or perhaps putting a child to sleep, when I turn it on. I will have to get some cork to put under it or otherwise figure out how to tone it down– perhaps HB can think about that for the next model.
Also: watch your back(or its back): because of the strong ice-breaking suction in the middle, the sides run up, and due to the direction of the spin, the overflow first is hidden, in the back.
One other point. You have to be extremely careful with the very sharp blades (no hand hold more than a fraction of an inch away) if you take it apart to clean. I just worry that over the lifetime of owning it, there will be one distracted moment when I half drop and then grab the blades and slice open my hand. I am trying to be very careful and attentive.

Hello,
This blender does everything it is supposed to do. I was pleased because I’ve tried 2 or 3 blenders in this price range and I’ve been disappointed with the ice crushing and frozen fruit crushing. The WaveMaker does make a big difference breaking up ice/frozen fruit. I also own a BlendTec (which I love) and I consider the WaveMaker to be my BlendTec Jr. Great for making kiddie shakes/smoothies, as well as for adults that want a smaller smoothie. I drink a GIANT green smoothie daily – which is why I included this comment.
A note to green smoothie drinkers – this appliance held me over nicely until I bought my mega blender.
Sincerely,
SR

. . . Abit louder than I’ve experienced with prior blenders, but this HB WaveMaker seems to accomplish alot more, and do a better job than any blender I’ve ever had. The unique swirl-channeling really works; the ice bits are all of a uniform size, and the right size, too.
The variety of options make it five-stars too. Heft, look, performance all
tops too. It’sall I could ask of a blender. Alot more than I’d think to ask,
for sure.

After working the crap out of an older Hamilton Beach model, I purchased this as a replacement unit. Simple, basic controls that provide everything we need for canning, making sauces, mixing shakes and making smoothies.
Can not beat the ease of use and cleanability for this price.

Pros: Nice color (all black), glass container, easy to clean
Cons: Plastic unit that houses blade component feels cheap; When in use item is EXTREMELY loud; DOES NOT offer any variable speeds despite the descriptions over each button; DOES NOT crush ice; If making almond milk or any thing like seeds, grains or nuts, many of them will get stuck down in between the blade component and can only be removed when thoroughly cleaning; each speed (there are only 2, high and low) do nothing to blend foods or liquids if there is over 1/4 of an inch inside the container; the low speed is not low, it’s the same as the high speed; only blends small amounts of liquids or foods at a time; retractable plug gets stuck inside and is very difficult to push back in or pull out; buttons have a cheap-easy-to break feel
All in all this blender pales in comparison to those old blenders of the 80’s and 90’s. This blender is overpriced, is not a true 10-speed blender and should not cost more than 12.95. It does NOT, I repeat DOES not crush ice nor does it blend/puree fruits for those of us who enjoy fruit smoothies with or without ice. I WILL NOT RECOMMEND that others purchase this blender. I have an old Oster food processor/blender and it is about 20 years old or more. For speed and productivity the Oster kicks this Hamilton Beach blender to the curb. Oh and by the way, that little “up-down, bouncing, wave motion” feature is all hype. This does nothing to blend whatever you’re blending. Do yourself a favor and read all the reviews, look around for blenders under 50.00 and you will find a few much better than this Hamilton Beach blender.
Put to the test: I attempted making 2 recipes which test the “metal” of any blender. The first recipe: humus. The 2nd recipe a strawberry, banana fruit smoothie (1 with ice, 1 without). For recipe one I had to use a spoon to actually mix the ingredients around as the blender left large chunks untouched. The container had about 3/4 cup of ingredients.
For recipe 2, I added frozen bananas and frozen strawberries with the same results as my try with recipe 1. Later after cleaning the blender I tried recipe 2 again, only this time with unfrozen fruit and crushed ice. Results: the smoothie was far from “smooth”. Large chunks of ice, and even fruit remained. The fruit had only been washed and was never frozen.
My professional opinion as an experienced cook: Don’t get this blender and Hamilton Beach should be ashamed for profiting off this total waste of human energy and raw materials! It does not deserve the title of “blender”!
